Children who are conceived through reproductive technology with the help of technology, such as in vitro fertilization or often called baby tubes, two times more likely to have autism than children conceived as a result of natural fertilization, according to a study.
The study involves nearly six million children born from 1997 to 2007. After considering several other factors such as maternal education and multiple births, increased risk of visible only to mothers under the age of 35 years, the researchers said.
"It appears that the risk of autism, the vast majority occur in single embryo transfer," said the study's leader, Peter Bearman, a Professor of social science at Columbia University in New York City.
Bearman added, there is no significant increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders at against the daughters of mothers who have one child.
"Knowing that we can reduce the risk of autism by way of limiting a single ovum transfer procedure, it is extremely important for women who will be undergoing the IVF procedure so that they can make better decisions," he said.
The results of the study were published online in the American Journal of Public Health on March 19, recently.
Reproductive technologies help includes all fertility treatments in which eggs and sperm occur outside the body. In IVF, in which fertilization takes place in the laboratory, the doctor usually picking more than one egg to be fertilized. This can lead tomultiple births.
For this study, Bearman's team collected data from 5.9 million births in California, including a baby conceived through reproductive 48,865 help and 32,922 autistic children.
The researchers compared the incidence of Autism at birth involving technology that does not help with fertilization (fertilization occurs naturally in the body).
"There is a relationship between IVF with autism. But, when we control the characteristics of women who are more likely to use IVF, such as factors of age and social status, the relationship is significantly reduced, "he said.
The risk that remains is largely due to the large number of twin births and pregnancy and childbirth complications that occurred among the children of IVF outcome, said Bearman.
According to the CDC, autism spectrum disorders are a group of flower-growingproblem that is causing social disturbances signifikandapat, communication and behavioral challenges.
The exact cause of autism is unknown but environmental factors, biological and genetic makeup may play a role, says the CDC.
Michael Rosanoff, Director of the health research community at Autism Speaks, agreed that the factors associated with the birth and the age of the mother, can helpexplain the relationship between IVF and autism.
"The study shows the effects of modest but significant of reproductive technologies help towards an increased risk of autism," said Rosanoff.
"However, the increase in risk is also determined by other factors associated with IVF and the age of the mother, including complications during pregnancy and childbirth or the birth of twins."
